Sweet Carolin

I had a lot of fun this week.

I got a ton of work done during the first part of the week for every one of my companies, but most importantly, Fountain Forward.

We continue to set ourselves up for future success, but the short term obstacles are real and must be handled carefully.

There are some very smart minds inside of Fountain Forward, but we’re also looking for more. That’s an area that I enjoy, but we also need our current key players to be recruiting as well.

Top talent is necessary for us to get to our next goal, and I’m focused on this right now (among other things like technology and factory partnerships).

With that said, it brings a new challenge to mind. We’re currently getting some attention from factory level contacts, which means we may have chances for accelerated growth. This is very exciting, but it only works with a great product and service.

We must execute to a high level otherwise, if we get an at-bat from the powers above, we could cost ourselves a seat at the big boy table.

Something that’s been on my mind… I’ve preached for years that I didn’t want to play at the factory level. I didn’t want to lose our unique identity, which seems to be unavoidable from what I’ve seen.

So, what’s changed?

Well, I think the industry has changed a bit, but also I think if we do a good enough job, we can pick and choose a bit. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t believe I am.

Also, once I’ve seen some of the big players and what’s behind the curtain, I’m not afraid to go against them. Our team is already solid, and I’m confident it’s going to get even better.

This weekend I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Elizabeth’s family in San Diego. Her parents, brother, cousins, Uncle/Aunt, and her grandma, whom she has talked about a lot.

We had a lot of fun doing little things around town and going to the Safari Park (was really cool) but my favorite part was meeting her uncle Bob and her grandma Carolin.

Bob works for Mazda corporate and knows a couple dealers I work with who have all spoken very highly of him. I can say that those comments are well deserved. He is a very sharp dude and one hell of a car guy. Even more importantly, it looked like he is a great dad. His kids were damn well behaved and carried themselves like mature young men, even though they’re like 11 lol. Super impressive.

Now, as for her grandma, this was quite the interaction.

Put simply, it was the first time I’ve had someone remind me of my mom. I was only minutes into meeting her and as I watched her mannerisms, I started to tear up a bit. It was very natural. She would be sharing a story, and as she went along, certain things would trigger memories of my mom and bring up emotions.

Needless to say, I enjoyed literally every moment with her. As I write this, I’m replaying some of her (quite demonstrative at times) mannerisms, and it’s bringing a blend of smiles and tears to my eyes.

I’m really excited to hang out with her again. I want to tell her that she reminds me of my mom.

With all of that said, there was one very special moment I had with Carolin.

She was telling a story about her late husband. It revolved around her supporting him when he started/bought his first business (I believe it was his first). He went to her at one point and mentioned how big the risk was and his concerns. Sounded like he may have been quite anxious (rightfully so).

She then shared what she told him during that moment.

“What’s the worst thing that could happen? Could we lose all of our money? Oh well, we can make more money. If I need to go back to work, I will!”

That hit me square in the heart. It was beautiful. It’s something I’ve discussed with Elizabeth many times. I want to support and provide for my family, but the support of my partner is paramount.

She has to be a “ride or die” in every way. The same goes for me.

The look in Carolin’s eyes when she said it showed me the passion, dedication, and love she had for her late husband, Peter.

This interaction sent me into the week with an uplifting perspective. I’m so thankful to have spent the time in San Diego this weekend. I feel revitalized after a tough few weeks mentally.

It’s a big week back in Houston (with one night in Dallas), prepping for Medellin next week! I’m excited to really grind this week.

I used the Rhino in my cover photo this week because it reminded me of Rhinoceros success when I saw them at the Safari Park. It was right in line with the uplifting feeling I have. A quote from Scott Alexander:

“Wake up with purpose, taking massive action, maintaining two-inch thick skin against adversity, and charging, rather than waiting, like a Rhino!”

Charge on.

PS: Special shoutout to my cousin, Gail, who came to have breakfast with me on Sunday. You are appreciated!
