A little perspective on Easter

First of all, what a fast paced week. There was a lot going on and needless to say I definitely was more aware of my interactions with others than the previous week.

Can you believe I  made it a whole week without punching someone! It’s the little things, you know?

Ok, onto the week. First of all, I had a great meeting on Tuesday with Dr. Villagomez, a member of the #SameHere Psych team and someone who I work with personally.

“Your room for humility will forever be expanding. Now is a great time to fill the new found room with humility.” – Dr. Villagomez.

That was the last statement she made before we ended our session. A great reminder going into the rest of the week and beyond.

Fast forward to Saturday afternoon… My dear friend Steve must have overheard that I wasn’t doing anything on Easter and sent me a text to join him and his lovely wife for dinner.

I was thinking about declining because I wanted an entire day to myself (if possible) but then something came to me… A bit of perspective, if you will.

I remembered that there had been a bit of a fallout with his son who he dearly loves. Of course context matters, but Steve has worked hard to try and make amends and his son has completely ignored him. I know enough to know that Steve does not deserve this at all and it’s absolutely killing him inside.

Now to add one more little piece of context, on Saturday morning when we were golfing I got a FaceTime from my father and Steve happened to be standing next to me when the call came in.

Upon answering, Steve said, “Hey Mark, I hope all is well! Father #2 out here just taking care of our son!”

(My dad loves that I have a network of great people in Houston and especially appreciates guys like Matt Capadonna and Steve Croxson who have stepped in as father-figures over the years.)

So, going back to the text from Steve, it became an easy answer.

It’s time to return the favor. I’m going to play “son” for the day and do everything I can to be a supportive surrogate-son.

It was a blast and I am so glad I was able to spend the time. I was able to listen to stories, watch some incredible golf, and be present the entire time.

A special thanks to Steve and Laurie for a wonderful meal and what an honor to be a supportive son for the day.

Taking that appreciation and perspective into the week.
